History of air ionization researches (part 3)

Chizhevsky used high-voltage generators for production of negatively charged ions of higher concentration, where he followed the works of Gess and Kolhoster. Chizhevsky supposed that one of the best biological effects was achieved by alternative radiation and that the erythrocyte sedimentation rate of a man decreased after the negative ionization, but at the same time too much radiation could cause undesirable, harmful effects. Chizhevsky and his staff determined that chicken put on weight after the negative ionization, moreover in comparison with another group of chicken the death rate was much lower. From the ionized eggs hatched out baby chickens stronger and better than usually. But when during 2-6 months rats, birds and sheep constantly stayed in negatively ionized atmosphere, there appeared undesirable symptoms, and some animals and birds had a so-called "nervous depression", as a culmination moment. It turned out that different species of animals had different levels of resistance to the constant radiation. Loss of appetite and weight, ceasing of growth and increase of death rate were the concomitant features of over radiation.

Later it was defined that in the beginning treating stage of radiation animals got the improved resistance to different diseases, moreover they grew well, were very movable and felt great. Chizhevsky was sure that ionization of air was essentially necessary for the maintenance of physiological functions of the body. Nedzel made the same experiments in his country but he didn't manage to confirm all observations of Chizhevsky group. He considered that the changes of unipolar radiation of animals to positive and negative ionization (i.e. bipolar) gave better results than constant radiation.

Yaglow and his assistants ascertained that negatively ionized air influenced the organism of a man, normalizing his state of health. But the following period of ionization during one hour caused the reversion of functions in the starting position. In the reports of this authors there were references to the facts that negative ions concentration varied from 5,000 up to 1,500,000 ions in one cubical centimeter. Later they paid attention to the fact that the positive ionization provoked headaches and bifurcation of respiratory tracts, while the negative ionization set up the feeling of comfort and pleasant relaxation.

Poor standardization of experiment conditions during 1930-1945 years could become a reason of multitude mistakes and differences in researches of different authors concerning the biological influence of air ionization. On the other hand, during this period there were stated some remarks on that question. All the remarks were made with a great enthusiasm but unfortunately they were not always examined carefully.

The reduce of pulse rate and sugar level in blood Fyazaky arrogated to negatively ionized air, while increase of both these rates he arrogated to positively ionized air. He also managed to define some other hematological changes of healthy people who were in equal conditions of the experiment. Okada tried to determine the sugar level in blood of rabbits, and here he managed to find out that under the influence of negative ionization the sugar level lowered and under the influence of positive ionization this level raised. There were not any changes in the sugar level after the transverse incision of a spinal cord. After the partial incision the operated animals had weaker reaction in comparison with intact ones. Okada reported that after the influence of negatively ionized air a gastric acidity of people increased, and after the positive ionization therapy it decreased.

After the Second World War there was established the industrial production of ion generators and it stimulated a great amount of experiments of physical and biological direction. While these experiments there was got very interesting and useful data on usage of ions in physiological purposes. Moreover, these experiments helped to find out information on reaction of people on ionized atmosphere. The researches of many authors confirmed the most part of results that were got earlier. So, the results were very encouraging and now it was vivid that it was very important to continue all scientific and research experiments and clinical observations. Biological influence of gaseous ions was referred to external factors, which were very difficult to observe using just usual biological tests.

Hilson and Harper performed a great job concerning the activity of rats adrenal. Positive ionization of rats showed the static decrease, while the electric current rush caused the decrease of activity. Clinical use of these results could be the following: people who fainted because of the current rush could easily recover if they were placed in the room with the positively ionized air. The following researches of enzymatic activity of adrenal could have a great clinic value.

Hollouway kept one group of animals in positively ionized air, the other group - in negatively ionized air. Then he compared the results of experiments with the group of animals in normal conditions. The conclusions of such an interesting work of this scientist characterized the state of animals weight in positively and negatively ionized air.

It was important to take into consideration the characteristic differences of different sexes animals, different types of ionization, duration of ionization. Besides all these factors there was one more point - critical weight loss after the first weight gain. The animals in positively ionized atmosphere began to lose weight in 63 days, the animals in negatively ionized atmosphere  - in 30 days. Reversion to the previous state also differed. The first group - in 70 days, the second - in 56 days. The critical weight loss after the first and second months was because of over ionization. (Chizhevsky and co-authors).

Theses observations could partially explain the fact that the man living in more severe conditions became stronger and more active, it was because "he lived in modern climatic conditions with unsteady ionization", high day temperature and low night temperature, often changes of humidity, barometric pressure, all these factors influenced people and that differed them from people of warmer places with steadier climate. Weight of adrenals, cholesterol and ascorbic acid content testified significant cyclic changes.

Hollouway notified: "Talking about negative ionization, so concerning the duration of ionization almost always we can say about doubling, as it was mentioned at description of weight change". As explained Hollouway there were discrepancies in literature concerning the physiological differences of ionization and especially negative ionization, because different authors chose periods of ionization randomly and these periods conformed with high, low and intermediate cyclicity, and these authors should correspondingly get evident stimulation, suppression or insufficient evidence of some effects. And there was also addition:

  1. different types of ionizers produced different quantity of ionization.
  2. different conditions of microclimate of rooms where the experiment took place (mainly it was temperature, humidity, airflows, air pollution)
  3. different sensibility of different kinds of animals.

All theses factors united together could become the reasonable explanation of results variety.
Korrity and Medina exposed 33 people with heightened sensibility to repeated negative ionization, each session continued 25 minutes. 24 people were treated by this method without any other remedies. And as the result there were noticed the decrease of systolic pressure. Worden made the experiments with he-hamsters and determined that their blood plasma had the better abilities of carbon dioxide production. Also he found out the high level of pH in blood of hamsters and stimulative effect on growth and weight of some organs after the negative ionization.

Jordan, Sokolov with co-authors, Rinfret and Veksler studied some other aspects of biological reactions on negative ionization. And they defined a kind of variability in comparison with the animals that lived in atmosphere with increased concentration of positive ions, as in controlled groups. Up to present day the optimal therapeutic level of ionization (quantity of ions, duration of ionization) was not determined. It was enough a little concentration of ions to get the definite satisfying effect, but higher dosage didn't increase chances for further improvement. Reaction on experimental ionization partially depended on constitutional type, individual sensibility, and balanced psyche of a person.

Sometimes some people felt a kind of discomfort after ionization. Patents with unsteady nervous system could not be treated by this method. Experimental chamber was not big and some people may have claustrophobia; fear to unknown things - all these things could become frightening and inhibitory factors.
